E-Bike Safety: The Role of ABS and Radar Sensors

In recent years, the popularity of electric bicycles, or e-bikes, has surged globally, particularly in urban areas. These vehicles offer a blend of convenience, eco-friendliness, and physical exercise. However, as with any form of transportation, safety remains a paramount concern. There are several system solution like ABS, radar and others which are aiming to provide a safer cycling experience.

The Application of ABS

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) traditionally associated with high-speed motor vehicles, has now found its way into the world of e-bikes. One of the pioneers in developing ABS for e-bikes is Bosch. Bosch's e-bike ABS system not only enhances braking efficiency but also reduces the likelihood of accidents. According to studies conducted by Bosch's accident research center, the installation of ABS on e-bikes could potentially prevent up to 29% of all e-bike accidents annually.

Different ABS modes are available to cater to various e-bike types, such as ABS Cargo for e-cargo bikes, ABS Touring for urban commuting, ABS Allroad for off-road adventures, and ABS Trail for challenging trails. These modes ensure that the braking system is optimized for the specific riding conditions and demands.

Despite the benefits, there is some debate about the necessity of ABS on e-bikes. In many regions, e-bikes are limited to speeds of around 25 km/h, and the motor only provides assistance within this speed limit. However, some manufacturers argue that even at speeds below 40 km/h, ABS can be beneficial, especially in adverse conditions. Furthermore, as e-bike technology advances and higher-speed models emerge, the integration of ABS will become increasingly critical.

Radar Sensors Integrated in eBike System

Radar sensors play a crucial role in enhancing the riding safety of electric bikes (e-bikes) by providing real-time information about the surroundings of the rider. These sensors operate by emitting radio waves and receiving echoes from objects in their path, effectively allowing the e-bike to "see" its surroundings. Magene 24G millimeter-wave radar solution is one of them.

It has a detection range of up to 140 meters and can track more than 10 targets simultaneously. Working with display, you can know rear vehicles without turning head making your cycling safety. The interaction between our display and the APP even enables navigation functionalities.

ABS ensures that the bike can be stopped safely and under control, while radar sensors provide vital information about the surroundings, allowing riders to make informed decisions and avoid hazards. These technologies represent a significant advancement in e-bike safety, making the riding experience safer and more enjoyable for all users.
