A Journey Through the Unexpected Electric Bikes

In the realm of sustainable transportation, electric bikes (e-bikes) have emerged as a game-changer. However, there exists a parallel universe of electric bikes that defy convention and push the boundaries of creativity and eccentricity. Let's embark on a journey to discover these unusual electric bikes.

three-wheeler, but not a tricycle

The Dolas Defender 250 electric bike has three wheels, three motors, and you can not call it a tricycle. In Europe, e-bike motors can only provide 250W of power. But Dolas seems to have found a workaround by simply putting three 250W motors on the bike for a total of 750W of power. Easy math question and a pretty fun ride.

And this isn’t just some rendering or concept bike, either. The company has actually built these, and the video evidence speaks for itself! Priced at €4,650 (US $5,100), the Defender is actually not that much more expensive than many other German e-bikes especially with 3 motors and large 48V 53Ah battery pack featuring 2,544 Wh of capacity.

A bizarre e-bike without chain

It doesn't have a chain. Instead, this £2,000 or $3,000 bike is entirely propelled by its electric motor. You can still pedal the bike as normal, but rather than moving the wheels, the pedaling motion simply tells the motor it's time to start moving.

If you start pedaling quickly, there is going to be a while until the motor realizes what's happening and kicks in to send you on your way. It's kind of odd of having a delay between your pedaling and having the bike actually set off. The main drawback of the all-electric drive, though, is that once you run out of charge, your fancy bike isn't going anywhere. The act of pedaling turns an alternator to help power the battery, but the maximum range Mando says you'll achieve is 37 miles from a single charge.

The e-Bike and also a suitcase

The Honda Motocompacto has to be one of the weirdest e-bikes we’ve ever seen.Just 3.7 inches wide, it’s made out of aluminum and plastic, and boasts a max speed of 12 mph and a range of 15 miles per 3 hour charge. It doesn’t appear to offer any real advantage over an electric scooter.

The bike is just $995 retail not for people under 14 years old or weigh over 265 pounds. But I am still not convinced to buy this only because of looking cool.

As we delve deeper into the world of electric bikes, it becomes clear that there's much more to this segment than just practicality and efficiency. So, the next time you're in the market for a new ride, why not consider stepping outside the box and exploring the wacky world of electric bikes?
